At The Team our paid internship programme has grown over a number of years, offering new graduates professional experience with both our brand and digital teams. We love to support and grow new talent by visiting grad shows and giving talks and studio visits to various universities throughout the UK. Working alongside graduates in the studio is really important to us and it’s a great way of finding new Team members too – we’ve successfully hired 4 Junior Designers over the last 2 years.
As you can imagine, grad show time is pretty manic for us! This past month we’ve visited Kingston_ing show @_ingston, Ravensbourne Degree Show @thedegreeshow, D&AD New Blood @DandADNewBlood and New Designers @NewDesigners.
The Kingston_ing show was held at the Candid Arts Centre – a funky two storey open studio in Islington. Exhibiting were a variety of strong conceptual final projects ranging from typography made of pins to a large wall of recyclable packaging boxes. The Degree Show at Ravensbourne put on a spectacle with aerial contortionists swinging from the roof. It was great to see strong conceptual work that also focuses on audience engagement. Along with visiting the graphic design course we popped up to the fashion studio to see the up-and-coming trends of the future.
D&AD New Blood was all-encompassing as usual – it took 3+ hours to go around all the booths bursting with students. We took plenty of business cards and talked to a wide variety of people from all over the UK. Every year we spot different universities that weren’t previously on our radar, and for us Falmouth really stood out.
New Designers was last on the list and a great experience. Held in the Business Design Centre in Islington this vast exhibition featured an array of design work from furniture and industrial design, through to graphics and illustration. We enjoyed chatting to students from Herts University and Plymouth who both stood out with their strong typography skills and consistent problem solving abilities.
At these events we’re on the lookout for something special that catches our eye – as an ideas agency we look for strong conceptual skills and attention to detail.
We were also promoting our new event- Workout that took place on 9 July. Workout was a day-long event in which we interviewed 25+ brand and digital graduates, giving them folio advice and feedback on how to showcase their work to the highest standard. At lunchtime they were also invited to a lunchtime pizza session where we gave them a taste of daily life as a designer, a studio tour and Q&A panel that discussed all areas of the business from project management through to production. The event was a huge success that received lots of positive feedback from attendees. We booked five interns from this day alone – so bring on next year!
